Below we’ve outlined what we’ll expect from you and what you can look for from us if you come and work here.
You enjoy solving problems and you're learning all the time. You're not just interested in fixing the problem in front of you, you want to understand the bigger picture, you're keen to solve the bigger problem that caused the problem in front of you.
You have a good grasp on object-oriented programming and you probably know c# and .Net but it's not absolutely necessary. Likewise, you know what a relational database is and you've likely used SQL before too.
You know what version control is and you're happy to test your own work and other people's too. You can feedback appropriately and you know that you always have more to learn so you can accept feedback too.
Mistakes aren't something you're afraid of. If you make one you'll put your hand up and apologise, if you see one you'll help to fix it and in both instances, you'll work with us to prevent it from ever happening again. We’re not afraid of mistakes either – we won’t berate you for making one but we will expect you to learn from it and to share those learnings with your colleagues.
You enjoy working with others and you're more interested in group success than your own success. You know that if the team around you succeeds then you'll all reap the rewards. You'll not only help those more junior than you to improve but also your peers and your superiors too. We all have a lot to learn and room to grow. You’ll need to work on your own sometimes too and, once you’re comfortable, you’ll have to run client meetings by yourself and go out on site for deployments and requirements gathering. If this is daunting then we’ll help you get there.
You're not afraid to stand up and say "I think there's a better way to do this" and we promise that we'll listen and do what we can.
You're happy to take responsibility for your time, your work, our clients' satisfaction and your colleagues' happiness. You understand that if we make you responsible we also have to make you accountable for what you're doing.
We'll give you lots of different work - some of our projects are big and some of our projects are small and you'll probably do both. We work across four major sectors: education, manufacturing, distribution, and architecture and construction but we also work in oil and gas, retail and public services. No two projects are the same here - one month you might be writing software to help a caravan manufacturer build caravans faster and the next you might be building an application that scans bar codes on the top of trucks in a warehouse.
We'll give you responsibility to do what's right. If you think there's a better way to do something for us or for a client then we'll expect you to say so and we'll help you to make it happen.
We'll challenge you and sometimes we'll expect you to work outside of your comfort zone but we'll also support and nurture you and help you to grow. You might be doing something you've never done before, you might be doing something none of us has ever done before, but we'll be there with you all the way. Sometimes it all goes wrong but we're right there to help pick up the pieces and you can be sure that we're all going to learn from the experience and we'll do it better next time around.
We'll want you to make decisions about your work and your life. You do, after all, have the best information for assessing the choices. If you've been working really hard and need some time off to spend with your family then take it, if you think that going to a conference is going to bring us necessary knowledge then go, if you want to take an idea you have and pitch it to a client then go for it. All we ask is that you make sure that you've thought about the impact on your clients and your colleagues and we'll do everything we can to help you out if that's going to be a problem.
We'll give you a lot of freedom to decide when and where and how you work.
We'll trust you. If you need to work from home then just go and work from home - we'll give you everything you need to be able to be effective if you're remote working.
Our work doesn't always use the latest and greatest of technologies - sometimes the bleeding edge is too risky for our clients - so we make sure that we have time to regularly peek into the future too. We're currently looking at using a HoloLens in a manufacturing environment and investigating the use of real-time streaming analysis in oil processing. Our clients do trust us to tell them what they should be looking at so if we think that there are compelling uses of artificial intelligence within architecture or that smartwatches will solve a crucial problem in airports then we have the time and the space to explore those ideas and we have a ready and eager audience for them too.
